The 14' Sunfish sailboat resembles a giant surfboard with a sail. It has a cockpit for the feet, making it comfortable to sit on top of the deck. It is one of the most popular and fun sailboats in the world. They are usually sailed solo, but can take 2 people. Weighing 130 lbs, they are easy to pull up on a beach. The very responsive Sunfish will sail on the slightest breeze. With more wind it pops up on a plane for an exhilarating wet ride. There are hardly words to describe the sheer joy of sailing a Sunfish in waves. It has been said that nothing should be this easy and this much fun.
The simple rig is great for beginners. The very active racing class is a draw for more experienced sailors. Frequent Sunfish regattas draw 30 boats and more. The variable rig set up allows all ages and sexes to compete together from teens to retirees. Women and Juniors often finish in the top ten at major regattas. Racing a Sunfish is a healthy wholesome fun fitness activity.
Sail School grads and experienced sailors can take a free Sunfish Basics Class. BCYC has 8 Sunfish available for member fun sailing and/or racing at no additional fee.
BCYC Sunfish sailors participate in regular skill-building group Sunfish Fun Sail events where each person gets their own boat.
Racing is every Tuesday evening during Daylight Savings Time, and once a month on Sunday afternoon of “Club Weekend” year round. |
