  • Fish & Grab "Scallop Grab" - July 14th - July 17th

Our next outing is planned to be a trip to the Scallop grounds off Crystal River.  The expedition can be made as a day trip but ideally is more fun as an overnight or two.  Due to the distance involved and the various ways to get and stay there we are planning a very loose schedule.  Details are:

I have reserved a room for Carol and I for 7/14 – 7/16 at the Port Hotel & Marina.  They may still have rooms available.  $99/nt. See - https://porthotelandmarina.com/

Other possibilities are:

1.       Kings Bay Lodge - https://www.kingsbaylodge.com/  I really like this place.  It is definitely “Old Florida”
2.       Best Western - https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotels-in-crystal-river/best-western-crystal-river-resort/propertyCode.10250.html  A little more expensive, but right next to the Tiki Bar
3.       Plantation Inn - https://www.plantationoncrystalriver.com/  Largest resort in Crystal River.  Has a golf course, dive shop, boat rentals, and a huge swimming pool.
4.       Crystal Isles RV Resort - https://www.rvonthego.com/florida/crystal-isles-rv-resort/?utm_source=yext&utm_medium=directory&utm_campaign=Yext%20Directory%20Listing  RV sites with cabins available.  On the South side of the river and up the road a piece.  I have read mixed reviews and plan to check it out this month.
5.       Anchoring in King’s Bay - https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Crystal_River/visit/plan_your_visit.html  Free! Just bring your own accommodations!
6.       There are several other motels in the area that are not on the water.

You will also need:

  • A boat.  I don’t know how many club members with boats are planning to go at this time.  Rental boats are available on site.  They are not cheap, but not too bad if the cost is shared by 5-6 people.  Kayaks and canoes are great fun around the springs, but not for scalloping.
  • A good chart, electronic and/or paper.  It’s about a 10-12 mile run from the anchorage in Kings Bay to the scallop grounds in Crystal Bay.  Navigation is not tricky as long as you are careful to avoid some charted hazards.
  • Snorkeling gear and catch bags.
  • Scallop cleaning equipment or a few bucks to pay someone to do it.
We will plan to get together each morning for travel and evening for stories.

If you are interested, check out the accommodations above and make reservations.  Plan to attend the Fish & Grab Committee meeting Saturday June 22 where we will discuss plans and answer questions. Hope to see you there!
